We are protected at home by a centrally monitored burglar alarm.  Maybe we
should all at that fact to our boat cards.

Good point Rich...

Security is an issue ...  Before we left for the trip on the loop we sold
our home and bought a "loft" (condo) with great security in a high traffic
area. Access to the  building and parking garage is secured. We used to have
a security guard/doorman but found that all the security cameras on every
floor and every door and all areas around the building and in the garage all
with direct links to a security firm that monitors the cameras live was
better. Now if someone comes to the front door (or waterway access gate) of
the building they appear on two cameras and are asked by the remote
monitoring company the standard questions. If they're a service worker, they
hold up their ID and are provided access once the photos are confirmed and
the person whose loft they're going to also confirms (or has pre-arranged
the visit through security).

If someone calls a loft dweller on the outside security panel for access,
they can turn on their TVs to a specified station and view the person(s)
requesting access and then monitor their movement to the elevator and down
the halls. 24/7/365 any person approaching the lofts from any direction is
on camera. Everyone in the loft whether they are in the underground parking
garage or on any floor is on camera. Anyone on the waterway side of the
building is not only on our cameras but also on the security cameras from
the hotel and the building with the bars and restaurants across the
waterway.

Through The Woodlands Township, we also pay for additional security from the
Sheriff's department (we're in the county and not incorporated as a city).
The park, bridge, theaters, and bars make our area an especially high
traffic area so we have concentrated security. Plus we have the mounted
patrol that has a stop by our building along with the private security
company we directly employ, we're about as secure as we're going to be
without going overboard.

This is a picture of our building next to the bridge. We're in the downtown
area of The Woodlands, TX on the waterway - www.WaterwayLofts.com
This will give you some idea of the events and amenities in the hood:
http://www.thewoodlandscvb.com/pages/Home/tabid/57/Default.aspx

I mentioned high traffic area ... this is downtown and within 10 blocks
we've got two parks (one with a musical fountain, 20 screen movie theater,
18 bars and restaurants, a standard Mall and outdoor mall, a city square in
Market Street, an outdoor Pavilion theater (Jimmy Buffet plays here) and so
on. So having the extra security is pretty nice. And having all the people
around almost 24/7 makes it less likely that someone will try something in
the area.

'Lo All,

If your home phone is listed in a phone book, Google will probably
provide a nice drive-by photo of your home, complete with address and
lat/long if you want. If you have a documented boat, someone can see
the boat and check the name and port with the USCG's website and find
your listed name and address. So, if you give someone a boatcard with
just the name of the boat and homeport - all your information is
still probably available. With just your name and general location,
the Whitepages.com website (and many others) will provide whoever is
inquiring with your listed phone number and address.

Actually, if you want to know something about anyone, there are
numerous for-pay websites that can almost instantly search nationwide
for whatever they are tasked to do.

Just Google your name. Most people would be astounded at the amount
of information that the internet picks up. Most state, county and
local governments are required to supply information upon request -
even if it does not pertain to the person requesting it. Much of it
is even available on the internet.

My point is - you basically have to had hid under a rock for your
entire life, or your life's story is available if someone wants to
research it. Why sweat what you put on a boatcard???? Instead, make
sure that you, your home, and other possessions are as secure as
possible under any and all circumstances - not just for the off
chance that someone you may have given a boat card to may have
nefarious intentions.

Why bother giving boat cards if you don't want folks to be able to contact you?

JMHO

Take care and be safe.
