My old girl Waconia who will turn 14 soon is have a colitis, she gets the
runs, problem. She is on the prescription gastro-intestinal dog food now and
is taking Metronidazole off and on. When she take the medication it clears
up within a day. About 2 weeks after the meds are gone it comes back and
then back on the meds for a 3 weeks.

Has anybody had this problem? Any advice?

Brunswick has been fighting an ear infection. I have been using a special
ear wash, ear was with some extra stuff in it, that the vet prescribed. This
keeps his ears open and fairly clean but does not clear it up. I am taking
him in to get the allergy test blood work done to see if that is the
problem.

Again, any advice?

Hi, Ted --
I don't personally have any advice, but I would refer you to Kathy and Wayne (DVM) Griffin @ Seabrook.  I think Doc Wayne would have some Newfie-specific ideas.  Good luck!  Mattsons (& Ingo and Wren)

Hi Ted,
Sorry to hear Waconia and Brunswick are not feeling well.
For Waconia, can you just keep her on Metronidazole. It is a pretty safe medication with little side effects. Maybe you find the lowest effective dose that works for her. You can also try a product called Tylan powder. We have had good success with that. Has she had abdominal x-rays? Would not be a bad idea.
For Brunswick, have they cultured the ears? He may have a resistant bacteria that is just not responding to the medications. Is it yeast or bacteria or both that is the problem? We recommend cleaning the ears twice weekly with epi-otic and medicating twice daily for a minimum of 21 days, or 1 week after the ears look normal - whichever is longer. We use an in house mixture of miconazole, (anti-yeast) baytril (anti-bacterial) and dexamethasone (anti-inflammatory).
Hope that helps.
Stacie

Hi Ted!

Have you tried canned pumpkin with no spices. Works on the runs and constipation. Just a tablespoon a couple times a day. Has worked for our guy....certainly would not hurt her.
