Re the submission by Pat Reischmann:-
I don't know if there has been some previous discussion on the Manta 44 that
has prompted Pat Reischmann to attach Cortland Stecks comments on the Manta
44. However, what I can say is that Cortland Stecks description of his hull
form [and I have also seen the hull lines] bears an uncanny resemblance to
the hull form that this office first developed in 1983 even down to the
larger than normal aerofoil section rudders and the tunnels for the
propellers. To be fair to Cortland Steck he is using deeper propeller
tunnels than we usually employ but we have used tunnels that deep[ on a
ferry design in 1991]. The knuckle is a feature we have been using since
1983. We have also used a compound curved double arch wingdeck for many
years[see Escape, Pacific Harmony and DeepSea 72 on our web site and an
article in PassageMaker Magazine]. The most important aspect of the hull
form he is using is the underwater canoe stern. This we developed in 1983
and is one of the major reasons for the high efficiency of this hull form
which we call the "CS" hull. Cortland Steck is not alone in using this
particular hull form. This hull form is now used by most designers of
displacement power catamarans the world over. However very few of them [
Roger Hatfield, Jeff Schionning and Peter Brady excepted] ever attribute the
development of their "new" and "unique" hull form to this office. I have
spoken about this hull at a number of symposiums, including Ibex, and I have
written numerous articles on this hull form in:- Multihull World, The Power
Of Multihulls, Pacific Motor Yacht, SeaSpray and PassageMaker. If anyone is
interested in how we developed this hull shape, and its attributes, they can
see some discussion on our web site and I can e-mail them a number of
articles if they contact me.
