Colleagues,

Many of you know this already, but I wanted to announce to the entire membership that I have made a major career shift. This week I am starting as the new Executive Director at Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR), here in DC at their national office. For the first time since 1997, when I started at World Education, adult education will not be my primary professional focus.

PSR (http://www.psr.org) is a physician-led organization working to inform the public on the public health threats posed by nuclear proliferation, climate change, and environmental toxins. PSR is a co-founder and US affiliate of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), and as the U.S. affiliate of this global network, shared in the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize in 1985. (Feel free to contact me if you want to learn more about PSR at jcarter@psr.org.)

PSR has encouraged me to continue to serve on the NCL board as Past President and advisor (we landed on “Senior Policy Advisor” as a title), with my chief responsibility to continue to serve as our liaison to CEF (just before the holiday I was elected to serve as CEF's Vice President this year). In addition, I’m committed to following through on my commitments to facilitate a couple of NCL presentations that will be happening in 2017. And I’ll try to be on as many policy calls as I can, get out intelligence to you all on the budget, send out Sheryl’s updates etc.

Again, my new organization is very supportive — it wants me to be reaching out to a broad range of constituencies, including the education world, so remaining on the board of NCL and CEF makes sense to them as well. I think we’ll all need to think more about cross-connections and expanding our list of potential allies during the unpredictable days ahead.

Thanks,

Jeff

P.S. Had a very productive lunch with my fellow CEF officers today and I’m really excited about CEF’s prospects this year, despite the humungous challenges we have ahead of us with the new Congress and administration. Our incoming president is terrific, and I think Sheryl now has enough experience under her belt to give CEF’s advocacy work more energy and focus.

ALSO — and I should have mentioned this before — but in light of my experience as NCL president, I should tell you how very impressed I am with the incoming NCL board, particularly Deborah and the officers, and their commitment to pushing us forward on expanding our membership and professionalizing our operation. I think those of you who are members are going to be pleased and proud to be part of NCL in 2017.
