Careening Down the Champlain Canal

Many of you have read my previous emails about what some folks now call
Fred's Folly .. dumping my boat for winter storage in the mud at my dock
when they drain the canal.

http://www.tug44.org/winter.maintenance/careening-tug44/

The link shows the full story, now that it's all done.  Beaching a boat and
allowing the tide to expose her hull for maintenance is a time honored
tradition in boating, it is called "careening", and that is what I have
done.

On the other hand, careening can also refer to what I do driving my boat
back home after a beer run!

Many folks have suggested I get a crane to get her righted and then put a
cradle underneath.  This isn't possible, as the mud is too soft to support
anything and there's no way to predict what will sink and what won't.

The mud is mostly clay and it tends to play tricks.  A quick calculation
tells me the boat's keel presses down about 5 times as hard as my boots do,
and yet my boots sink a foot deep in 2-3 minutes.

Meanwhile, Merry Xmas and a Happy New year to All!!!

I looked at a Hummingbird 998c at Bass Pro. It came with everything but
the map chip and radar but was able to be upgraded to handle a radar
unit. I plan on using it on a dive/salvage boat and since it came with
side scan sonar made it seem perfect for my use

I may or may not add radar to it as I plan on using it among the islands of the South Channel in Georgian Bay.

I have never heard of this brand before and am looking for opinions. Good, bad or ugly.

I have found various sites online about it but of course they all carry
the usual propaganda about it being the best thing since sliced bread.

Thanks

Rob

Just bought a new fishing boat with the Hummingbird 997C and side imaging
sonar. It does a lot of stuff.

Robert:

Hummingbird is a well known name among fishermen in the southern US,
and perhaps more areas.  Very popular fish finders, depth finders and
sonars in general.  I would not hesitate to buy that brand.  It seems
to be carried by many outlets and dealers.

I can't comment on its radar capabilities, since I have never experienced them.
