For video, during the event visit this URL: http://esc.umich.edu/grindr ABSTRACT The Chinese government has become increasingly involved in global standards-making events such as the annual Internet Governance Forum and China’s Wuzhen Internet Summit (aka the World Internet Conference) that leverage China’s national standing in international standards-building events to shape global the future of global Internet governance. At the same time, Chinese regulators are also exporting standards not through national, or international governance frameworks, but through the community standards of individual platforms. This talk examines how the Chinese government is expanding its regulatory control over global consumer platforms through the expansion of Chinese-owned consumer platforms. SPEAKER BIO Aynne Kokas is an assistant professor of media studies at the University of Virginia. Her multiple-award-winning first book, “Hollywood Made in China” (University of California Press, 2017) argues that Chinese investment and regulations have transformed the US commercial media industry. Her next book project “Border Patrol on the Digital Frontier: The United States, China, and the Global Battle for Data Security” examines the policy implications of the transfer of consumer data between the United States and China. Her research has also appeared in “Information, Communication, and Society,” “Journal of Asian Studies,” “PLOS One,” and others. Her research has been funded by the Fulbright Foundation, the Social Science Research Council, the Mellon Foundation, The National Endowment for the Humanities, and others. Professor Kokas’ writing and commentary have appeared in forty-six countries and eleven languages. She is a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
