DSC and MMSI numbers

G'day all, we get many DSC call with no other information other than an MMSI
number. Not very helpful! However, this URL

http://www.itu.int/cgi-bin/htsh/mars/ship_search.sh#start

will allow a lookup of all "internationally" registered numbers if you have
online access. It could be helpful in identifying the vessel sending DSC
signal.

Also it's a good way to check to make sure your number is registered and the
limited details are correct. If you don't find yourself in there but did
register you most likely registered thru BoatUS or some other entity whose
numbers don't get into the international data base. If so I'd sure figure
out how to get them into the master list. What good is a DSC if the
authorities, who have access to the full details, can't find your number?

The FCC issued MMSI numbers are the only ones entered into the ITU database.

As always YMMV
