Vuecrest Do-Gooders

Maybe you’ve seen them...They are the people who quietly go through the neighborhood doing good deeds not bothering about who gets the credit. During the snow storm, my husband and I just missed two of these wonderful, exemplary humans who had shoveled a path all the way from our front door to our driveway. They did not leave a note and did not ask for compensation. They just swooped in, offered a generous act of kindness, and disappeared like Marvel super heroes. If anyone knows who they are, please allow me to give them a “shout out” in the Newsletter. They certainly deserve it. The only evidence they left at my door were footprints. If you are able to identify these Do-Gooders, I would be inclined to bake something for them.

How to Avoid the Dreaded Northwest Green Roof!

The saying goes that “April showers brings forth May flowers” which is all well and good, unless they appear on your roof! This season is when our rooves are screaming for attention. Here are some tips to avoid expensive repairs and necessary roof replacement.

The best time to treat roof moss is when it's actively growing. Moss grows very little in the summer, but it kicks into high gear during rainy seasons, moderate winters and early spring months. Treating right before peak rains is perfect timing for roof moss treatments.

TIP #1 Prevention is key.

Trim tree branches hanging over your roof to allow the sunlight to hit it more directly.

Regularly clear away debris accumulating on your roof.

Proper ventilation helps prevent moisture problems

Keep your gutters clear of debris so that water can drain properly from the roof.

TIP #2 Moss should be removed from your roof quickly.

Once established, mosses hold in moisture that deteriorate surfaces beneath.

Moss has the ability to weather long drought periods by dehydrating. Moss can also grow at low temperatures during winter months. Moss thrives in cool, mild climates.

TIP #3 Tried and True Moss Removal and Prevention Treatments.

STEP 1: Hose off and brush all moss loose from your roof shingles.

STEP 2: Apply a store bought or DIY cleaning solution to remove the moss (such as a 50:50 mix of laundry strength liquid chlorine bleach and water. Apply with a sprayer and allow the solution to dwell on the roof surface for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with low pressure water. Be sure you protect vulnerable plants below!

STEP 3: Prevent future moss growth by installing zinc or copper on the roof. When driving by a neighbor's house, have you ever wondered, “Why is there white powder on their roof?” In short, it is known as zinc sulfate powder which is used to deter roof moss. Zinc deterrents often come in two forms, a zinc strip, or zinc sulfate powder.
