Moving Marine Trader 34

I am in the process of buying a Marine Trader 34 DC and need some help. The
boat is located in New York (Queens) and I need to get it to Lake Erie
Sandusky). My choices are to have it shipped or to cruise through the Erie
Canal to Lake Erie.
Any suggestions? Is it possible for a husband and wife team to cruise through
the Erie Canal?
How long would you expect it to take assuming daylight travelling only?
Does anybody have any experience shipping boat by truck? I can get estimates
but need to know the shipping height of the MT34 (without mast etc). Does
anyone have that information?
Thanks for your help.

Werner,

That's the ideal boat to do the Canal, you'll have no problem at all
with the two of you making the trip. You can do about 40-50 miles a day,
depending on how many locks and how busy they are. We made 2 trips thru
the canal in our 43, it is a wonderful trip, and it makes a great
introductory cruise to get to know the new boat. There are plenty of
places to stay along the canal, many are free, and there is much to see.
I'd be in no hurry if you can take the time to enjoy the trip. You'll
need to get under 20 ft. You should have no problem with that,
especially if you can temporarily lower the mast, which is what we did
for the canal trips. We didn't need the dink, or the radar. All stops
were tied up at a marina or canal wall. There are a number of delightful
parks adjacent to the canal, quiet, calm water.

Enjoy!

Any suggestions? Is it possible for a husband and wife team to cruise

through

the Erie Canal?

<<snip>>>

Werner,

I made the trip up the Hudson and across the Erie Canal as far as the west end
on Oneida Lake last summer bringing Cygnus up from Annapolis.  I understand
the west half of the canal is prettier than the east, but it was enjoyable
none the less.  I can highly recommend stopping at the Schenectady Yacht Club
and the Ilion Community Marina.    From the Federal Lock in Troy to Brewerton
NY took me 2-1/2 days.  That's about 130 miles and involves going through 22
locks.  The guidebooks say to allow about 30 minutes per lock and that's a
reasonable average.  It mostly depends on the amount of traffic in the canal
when you're going through.

Is it easily possible for a husband and wife to cruise through the canal.  My
wife and I have successfully passed through many locks by ourselves in Cygnus.
There's nothing about the rest of the passage that requires more people.

I should also say that the Hudson River is a beautiful passage.  The hills,
bridges and towns are gorgeous.  Even passing by Manhattan is interesting.  If
you time the flood tide well you can get a 2 kt push the whole way up the
river.  The trip from Liberty Landing State Park to Troy was about 130 miles
and took me 1-1/2 days.  I overnighted at the Catskill Marina in Catskill and
enjoyed a great Italian dinner in the village.

I think the experience is worth the time and would encourage you to "deliver"
the boat yourself.  It's a great experience.  If you do take the canal route,
give me a shout and I'll meet you in Brewerton and drive you to make a supply
run if you need to.

Werner,

Why would someone buy a cruising boat and then have it trucked when they
could cruise one of the best, least intimidating, cruising routes available?
Unless you simply can't take two or three weeks to deliver the boat
yourself, I would urge you to cruise the Hudson River and Erie Canal to Lake
Erie.  I delivered a boat from Rhode Island to the Thousand Islands region
of New York in 2005 via Long Island Sound, the Hudson R, Erie Canal, Oswego
R and Canal, Lake Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River.  It took ten days,
including 1 lay day for weather on Long Island Sound and 1/2 day in
Kingston, NY for repairs.  We passed through 30 locks.  There were four of
us on a 50' pontoon boat, but two reasonably fit people could have done it.
Saying that, however, I have to admit that my wife would not have been happy
if she and I had been alone for our first locking experiences.  She
literally "learned the ropes" on that trip and she and I have since locked
through from Ft. Myers to Stuart, FL, on our 42' trawler with no problems.

The trip from RI to Alexandria Bay, NY, along with cruising stretches of the
ICW with friends, gave me the desire to do more inland cruising after 35
years of commercial fishing on the ocean.

One important consideration with regards to the number of people required is
the helmsman's easy access to the side deck to grab a lock line or hook your
boat hook on a lock ladder.  Especially when you are locking up, the lock
lines will be hanging straight down and you won't be making fast to anything
to spring on.  So you want to grab a line or ladder near each end of the
boat before it gets cock-eyed.

I hope you do the trip and enjoy it.

Hello Werner,
If you follow the advice of the list you shouldn't have any problems with
the trip. When do you plan on making the journey? One thing to watch out for
in the early spring is all the flotsam, everything from railroad ties to truck
tires find their way into the river after the spring thaw. I have had a few
near misses in my many years on the river. At trawler speed you shouldn't have
a problem but I'd avoid night navigation if at all possible.
I recently bought a new to me boat and after two months of repairs and
setbacks finally had the flybridge stripped off and trucked from Cape May to
Jersey City, NJ.If I had followed the advice given by Rudy and Jill and
others, I would have saved a considerable amount of money and time (2 months
and 12 BU's). A half hour prepurchase sea-trial isn't enough time for many
ills to show up. Take the boat out and really put it through it's paces and if
the broker or owner doesn't want you to, walk away. I would have saved a lot
of money if only I would have changed a raw water impeller ........
Whichever way you chose to go, best of luck with your new boat,
