5:30 pm to 8:00 pm
Harmon Brewery
Puget Creek Restoration Society will be speaking at Tacoma Green Drinks On
October 6th. Green Drinks is a low obligation, high fun group of people
that like to get together once a month and talk about green stuff in Tacoma.
Anyone is welcome, and it's a good way to tour the bars of T-town. In
October, our speaker will be talking about what's new with the Puget Creek
Restoration Society.
PCRS is dedicated to protecting, enhancing, and restoring the Puget Creek
Watershed and similar streams, wetlands, and green spaces on Commencement
Bay and Puget Sound. Through hands-on restoration and research, educational
outreach, and advocacy -- and by increasing environmental awareness -- we
seek to preserve this important habitat so it will continue to be an example
of what people can do to protect and restore the environment in an urban
setting.

About Live Downtown
Live Downtown, the latest initiative from Downtown On the Go, provides financial incentives to encourage employees to live close to work. DOTG has partnered with HomeStreet Bank, O'Connor and Associates, American Financial Solutions and other businesses to offer discounts on home ownership and rentals for employees. Employees can save up to $6,000 on a new home (depending on loan amount) or up to $2,400 a year on a rental property. The benefit is free to the employer.
Downtown On the Go released the program in the spring of 2011 in an effort to improve employees commutes and give them more access to options like biking, walking or using downtown transit and the Link. Live Downtown currently has four downtown employers participating - BLRB Architects, University of Washington Tacoma, SiteCrafting and the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts. Businesses participate for various reasons including recruitment and retention, an opportunity to build residential density and improve downtown Tacoma, to save costs on parking, and to improve the health and wellness of their employees.
Employees enjoy decreased transportation costs, increased physical activity through walking, biking or taking transit to work, decreased time spent commuting, and, of course, access to downtown amenities including the new grocery store, arts and entertainment, dining and nightlife. The added benefit for downtown Tacoma is increased residential density, helping to encourage economic development in downtown Tacoma.

Join us today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Wright Park for the first walk of the season! This year, we've added a "power walk option" and we continue with our popular history walks. Walks start at noon.
Downtown On the Go and the American Heart Association, in partnership with Metro Parks, are coming together to host this walking event in celebration of National Walking Day. This event will kick-off Downtown On the Go's 2012 Walk Tacoma series sponsored by Franciscan Health System.
Held in Wright Park, the event will include a "power walk" led by fitness trainer Paige Van Der Vliet of Tacoma Living Fit, and a historical walk led by Melissa McGinnis and Erik Hanberg of Metro Parks. The walk, sponsored by The Hub, will begin at the south side of Wright Park by the lion sculptures at noon and will be about 1.5 miles in length. Walkers will also be able to visit booths from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. to learn more about cardiovascular health, receive information about other walking events, and get to know DOTG and AHA. There is no pre-registration necessary, simply join us at the meeting spot.
The Walk Tacoma 2012 series is a six-event walking series held in April, June and August. The fun, casual walks, now in their third year, encourage downtown employees and residents to exercise and enjoy the outdoors by discovering the different walking routes and parks in downtown Tacoma. Walking maps of all of the routes are available at no cost at Downtown On the Go (950 Pacific Ave, Suite 300), at many downtown businesses, or by contacting Meagan Kula, Downtown On the Go Coordinator, at 253-682-1734 or dotg@tacomachamber.org.
