gas outboards

The gas motor's emit a much more "noxious" odor called carbon monoxide. If I
were going to put a generator on the Prowler with gas outboards, it would be
diesel with its own separate fuel tank. Modern common rail diesels don't smoke
or smell at all. The outboards have a power to weight advantage and a cost
advantage. I like the look of the Prowler, but I would look into Volvo diesels
with composite outdrives as an option, ( can still tilt them up) large
alternators for charging, no dangerous fumes etc.

It is, perhaps, more accurate to say-

All internal combustion engines produce carbon monoxide but petrol engines
produce more carbon monoxide but much less soot than diesel engines.

WHAT ARE DIESEL ENGINE EXHAUST EMISSIONS?
Diesel engine exhaust emissions (commonly known as 'diesel fumes') are a
mixture of gases, vapours, liquid aerosols and substances made up of
particles. They contain the products of combustion including:

carbon (soot);
nitrogen;
water;
carbon monoxide;
aldehydes;
nitrogen dioxide;
sulphur dioxide;
polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

The carbon particle or soot content varies from 60% to 80% depending on the
fuel used and the type of engine. Most of the contaminants are adsorbed onto
the soot.

I couldn't disagree more with the idea of complicating a simple and workable
concept such as the outboard powered Prowler with the addition of a diesel
gen-set. There is beauty in its simplicity.
Adding an entire fuel system, tankage, exhaust and a heavier diesel
generator to a design which exudes simplicity is counterproductive. .
While small diesels have their merits, initial cost, maintenance and the
disproportionate expense of the composite outdrives spiral the acquisition
costs beyond many boaters' means.
While the diesel's legs may be raised to allow shallow water boating and
beaching, the advantages of having the outboard motors and their mounting
brackets completely out of the water, as they appear to be on the Prowler,
will be appreciated by owners who have dealt with corrosion issues in their
marinas.

The Prowler is an elegant alternantive to complex boats. If a prospective
buyer seeks "more" then there certainly are other boats on the market.
