I started with about 7:1, attached the 1/2” line and led it back to the stern cleat. (I could never get enough angle from midship.) Them I would let out additional anchor rode until I had the angle that I needed. Last, I reattached my snubber. Also, as I mentioned before, I learned to keep enough extra line at the stern that I could loosen the line to allow the bow back into the wind without disturbing the anchor rode or snubber if the weather changed.
As I think Bob correctly pointed out, every boat is different and you are going to have to play around with this to find out what your boat really likes.
Not sure that I would be comfortable with 5:1 because you are putting more load on the anchor when you do this. However, getting the bow into the swells sure makes for a better nights sleep.
