Another White Trash Wedding by Diane Kurzyna aka Ruby Re-Usable
at
Tacoma Contemporary (TaCo) Woolworth Windows

NOW through June 13th, 2009

Another White Trash Wedding is part of an on-going series exploring the
unholy relationship we have with waste.  Utilizing disposable materials
such as plastic bags and vegetable netting, the “white trash” in the title
is quite literally referencing the color of the junk that is most abundant
in my collection of discards.  It is not only a comment on a society wedded
to over consumption but also a celebration of human ingenuity, a call to
rethink what we throw away and make use of stuff that we normally overlook.
When ordinary materials such as plastic bags and tape can be transformed
into life-sized figures filled with beauty and grace, then truly anything is
possible.  Make Art Not Waste!

The finished installation includes something old, something new, something
borrowed, and something blue: the new life-sized bride and groom figures
(which are seated on borrowed chairs that are suspended from the ceiling,
invoking the Jewish tradition of carrying the couple in chairs), plus an old
7 feet high white trash wedding cake, a blue "flower girl" (life-sized ten
year old female figure made from blue plastic bags and clothed in white,
cloud-like plastic bags), plastic bag flowers, and a decorative chain of
mostly white crocheted plastic bags and attached plastic flotsam and jetsam
measuring about 42 feet long.  Read about it in the Weekly Volcano
Spewhttp://weeklyvolcano.typepad.com/spew/2009/03/ron-swarner-monday-is-a-nice-day-for-another-white-trash-wedding----those-ubiquitous-plastic-grocery-bags-which-consumer.html
