Hundreds and thousands of dogs are pulled from shelters and returned to their owners every year because of microchips. Do your dogs wear collars when not at home? We had met years ago at the off leash time in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. After the initial shock of her diagnosis, I had a feeling I knew where she was going with her thoughts. Sure enough, she asked us if we would care for her dog should she predecease him. We already had two dogs, two cats, five chickens and two bee hives in our care. The idea that we would take on an already geriatric Newfoundland with multiple health issues was out of the question. Hah! Well, that lasted about a day until I spoke with my partner about it and visited Irina at home. We both realized this was something we had to do. Irina died in September and we took in Azul the beginning of October. Azul was a big stubborn old boy, used to having things done his way. He was in rough shape, as Irina was unable to care for his needs for months, but within a few weeks we had him cleaned up and eating like a champ. He had Cushing's syndrome and two front feet that had two be wrapped in multiple layers of surgical dressing every other day in order to prevent reoccurring sores from worsening. Before long, Azul had gotten under our skin. He had soulful eyes that tugged at your heart strings. He loved going to the park. We bought a ramp for the car to assist him getting in and out with his compromised front feet. Sadly, in January he suffered a catastrophic break in his deformed right front foot. At 9 1/2 yrs we made the difficult decision to put him down. Irina was very thoughtful realizing caring for Azul was not only an emotional commitment, but also a financial one. She generously provided for Azul's care in her will. In loving memory of our dear friend Irina and the love of her life, Azul, we have decided to donate those funds to NCA Charities. I think she would be pleased to know her love for Azul and of the breed will be furthered by this donation to the Newfoundland Club of America Charitable Trust Endowment Fund.
