Frederick the Great by Menzel
   • Monday, April 25, 2022 at 7 PM at St. Luke's Memorial Episcopal
Church in Tacoma

The above painting by Adolph von Menzel entitled "Flute Concert of
Frederick the Great in Sanssouci"  provides a snapshot in 1752 of one of
Frederick the Great's nightly evening concerts, and is a perfect
depiction of what you will be experiencing at St. Luke's Memorial
Episcopal Church on Monday evening! Included on the program are concerti
both for harpsichord and flute by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Frederick’s
court keyboardist seen seated at the harpsichord above, a concerto by
the Prussian king’s illustrious flute teacher Johann Joachim Quantz  who
listens, leaning against the wall to the right, and another by Frederick
the Great II of Prussia himself, who stands in the middle playing a
concerto, almost surely by himself or Quantz. Carl Philipp Emanuel's
father Johann Sebastian Bach visited the court just a few years prior to
the date of this painting and subsequently presented the king with his
"Musical Offering", from which our special guest David Schrader from
Chicago will play the "Ricercare a 3" for solo harpsichord, in addition
to a harpsichord concerto in G Minor by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.
(David's improvised cadenzas are always spectacular.)

Jeffrey will play an exact replica of most likely the very flute
Frederick plays in this portrait, today in the Library of Congress and
copied by Rudolf Tutz of Innsbruck. Quantz made this flute for the king
at an extremely low pitch (more than a whole tone low), at which the
flute, not to mention the strings and harpsichord, sounds particularly
sonorous.

In Menzel's painting court composer Franz Benda plays violin with other
court musicians on violin, viola and cello around him. Frederick's
sister Wilhelmine of Bayreuth listens on the pink sofa, with court
composer and violinist Carl Heinrich Graun standing to her right. We
look forward to having you assume their positions in the painting and
joining us on Monday! (Rest assured, the men who aren't playing an
instrument may sit at St. Luke's.)

   David Schrader ~ harpsichord
   Jeffrey Cohan ~ baroque flute
   Elizabeth Phelps ~ baroque violin
   Courtney Kuroda ~ baroque violin
   Lindsey Strand-Polyak ~ baroque viola
   Annabeth Shirley ~ baroque cello
