We typically work 8-5, with longer hours on days with night council meetings. So, you're right that the hours worked here are much less than at a big firm. I'm truly grateful for my life and the shorter hours I work than my friends in Big Law; I'm fairly certain I wouldn't have had 3 kids if I worked there. Sorry for complaining earlier - a lot of factors outside of my control went into this Thanksgiving being last minute, and that normally doesn't happen, so I'll make a better effort to chill out about it. (As a planner, I hate last minute.)

My name is Jim Lewis, and I am a Deputy City Attorney for the City of Las Vegas, Nevada. Now, I think I was invited on to this list years ago, when I was still a young lawyer. I turned 40 this year, so I am probably not a young lawyer for purposes of list anymore. However, I have noticed common theme amongst those using this listserv in the last two weeks-people not having the time to balance work and life. Our schedule here is Monday-Thursday 7:00a-5:30p, and I find government practice much more accommodating to my personal life than my life at a large firm.
I am curious as to what types of hours people are working. I certainly am not putting in the amount of hours that were necessary at the big firm before I entered government practice. Anyone care to share?

It's Thanksgiving week here in the States, so I'm stressing about how I'm going to get everything done while working right up to the night before the big day. Family is coming for lunch, the house isn't clean, all the groceries aren't bought (most, but not all), and I had wanted to make a few things ahead but didn't get to this weekend because other responsibilities crowded out my plans. Arg!
OK, thanks, I feel a bit better now getting that off my chest.

Subject: [Younglawyers] Trade-offs

Here's an interesting article that has made me think again about the trade-off that probably a lot of us made when we went to work for a governmental entity. I haven't regretted it, although I do sometimes wistfully wish I had the income of my law school friends who went the big law route.
Also, as to being less ambitious at 35 than I was at 25, I would say that I've achieved a lot of what I wanted at that age. I've just been informed that I've been promoted to Senior Attorney, which is as high as most people get in this office, and the lowest you can be without management duties. I still would like to advance one to two more positions in this office, which would put me at one slot below the top job, but at this stage I wouldn't want to be City Attorney, mostly because I have 3 small kids and they are my first priority.
Thought-provoking, at any rate.....

Leann, Good luck getting everything ready for the big meal tomorrow! We are traveling for the holidays so I don't have to cook or get my house ready for guests - hooray!
Our office hours are fairly flexible and some attorneys work quite a bit from home. I prefer to keep a 8-5 schedule when I can, but I take advantage of the flexibility to work out during my lunch hour. (With a toddler at home, it's hard to find the time otherwise.) My boss is very supportive of this, and really encourages all the attorneys to get out of the office in the middle of the day to recharge. One of my fellow attorneys and I were even able to run a half-marathon while we were in Chicago for IMLA this fall!

Leann - Congratulations at your promotion! Wow, this article really struck a chord with me. I know I started work for government in 2002 when very few firms in Oregon were hiring. I never have regretted it.
I started as City Attorney for my small city two years ago (20,000 population) and I love it. I almost didn't get this job because I was "hometowned" and terrible rumors were spread about my ethics, even though I had much more relevant government law experience than any of the other candidates, all locals. But with a little assistance from my mother-in-law who knows a judge or two, I have my dream job. It is funny to me that it is still a matter of who you know, rather than what you know.
