Various guide books (nautical and travel), trip advisor and local visitor centers have lots of good info. Google Earth is great for getting the lay of the land and seeing what is walking/biking distance vs needing a car.
Lots of good info out there but a lot depends on what interests you also.
Plan to stop for a couple weeks to a month periodically. Take advantage of much lower long term slip fees and less boat fuel to cover the cost of rental car. This past summer we actually took the truck with us from Chicago to Kentucky Lakes. We would travel 200-300 miles then get a slip for a couple weeks to a month, then get a 1 day car rental to run back and get the truck. We then had easy access to the surrounding area. When we were ready to move on, we asked and the marinas had no problem with us leaving the truck for a week or two until we could come back and move it to the next location.
