Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsHi Greg,
I agree with the comments that AGLCA is the most active source of active loop info now using postings. It has been historically. I think from what I’m catching here, their new effort to keep members after they loop using the $150 Lifetime rate is an excellent idea to keep the past loopers involved....they needed that in my opinion.
This great-loop listserve is pushed along by Freds tug a lot and periodically has looper information. My sense is that a lot of people get it but don’t participate. As a free resource it’s good and does have some nuggets of loop information worth capturing. ( I have snipped information from both sources for years and put them in my own files for different segments of the loop). Yes, we’re still loopy after all these years!
We also snip some info from MTOA and wonder if the SSCA is worth joining. Anyone here been with that group for a while?
eBoatCards is interesting and may prove to be a valuable resource. I think you’ll find annual looper groups using it in the future. One reason is that a group can be started for say 2015 to capture loop planning, be active during loop execution and then form an alumni of past loopers. It would allow the paid AGLCA members to share with other loopers who are also doing the loop but don’t need to or want to join that association. Sharing good information is fundamental.
http://www.eboatcards.com/cruising-america/ covers the loop, but many other Group segments of the Loop and related trips exist now and will surely grow.. like Eastern Erie canal Group now, http://www.eboatcards.com/erie-canal-east/ and surely a Gulf Coast group later which I don’t think exists yet as a group.
It’s my understanding that there will soon be a locater service associated with eBoatCards that will tell where other boaters are. That might be an nice feature for loopers. (hope it’s free but don’t know yet)
eBC is very new and seems to be growing fast. The fact that it’s tied to ActiveCaptain makes me think it will be another great resource for boaters.
ACap has proven to be a great resource for us. Last year as we moved north on the ICW, Vaughn was on the helm using her IPAD to read the hazard markers. We’ve used it for anchorages and marinas since it started up years ago. Yesterday I was scanning the Chesapeake area to decide what we want to do as we loop the area this summer/fall. There is talk of tying in more local information too, festivals, museums, sights to see, events and such. I think it’s user basis and real time information will just keep getting better. After all, it’s run by an active captains for sure!
I think the idea that a boat you know pops up on your screen nearby is going to be fun for the Loopers involved.

We are expecting 35-40 Loopers here tomorrow for a Southern Bay Gathering, but I think they are mostly Goldens. Potlucks and BBQ in July on the Potomac!
