California – grounded sailboat

The US Coast Guard issued a news release stating that it responded to the grounding of an 82-foot sailboat near Pacifica, California. The three persons on board were removed by members of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. There were no reports of injury or pollution. The vessel owner is making arrangements to have the sailboat removed. (3/4/13). The rest of the story: Unofficial reports indicate that the three individuals had stolen the sailboat from a marina in Sausalito, stocked it with pizza and beer, and ran aground while headed down the coast. The sailboat’s owner recognized it from the TV news reports and called the police. The three individuals are being held in the San Mateo County jail on suspicion of grand theft and conspiracy. The owner was able get the sailboat refloated after a day.

California - grounded sailboat

<SNIP>

More to the story.  Salvage crew got her off the beach nearly 24 hours later; had to wait for high tide.  Local news coverage reports major damage to the rudder, bolt on keel shows signs of failure at the joint (pounding in the surf for nearly 24 hours), diesel fuel leaking, badly bent prop, engine fried.  She's hauled out in Richmond, CA; yard manager estimates two months to get her back in the water.

Bail has been set for each of the ne'er do wells @ $1MM each.

She's safe now and the guys arrested. She's a 2.7 million dollar vessel.
She's been pulled-off and hauled at a yard. About a half-million in damage.
The rudder is broken and the keel is loose. Hull is intact.
