Buzzards Bay 34 pricing

George,
We did have a large price increase.  I did laugh at myself a bit while
I was submitting that first message to you guys after that good
gentleman was taking issue over our 285,000 price.  Why the increase?
Its what they cost!  When you build a quality boat with top
materials....and you build it light....and you build it strong... and
you finish it out great....they are expensive. We build a custom
quality boat.  We don't use liners to quickly finish off surfaces.  We
use LABOR!  Because its much lighter to hand finish. So the consumer
gets a boat that is fast, rides excellent (maintains that tunnel
clearance even when loaded) and is very fuel efficient.  Its that power
catamaran majic where if carefully designed and built, you get to have
your cake and eat it too.  Thats value.  I guess it comes down to what
you compare it to.  A loaf of bread would be expensive at $10.  But our
Buzzards Bay 34 has more room, more practical cruising features,
achieves higher performance, than the top quality 40'plus deep-vee's
that are going for well over $600G.  And our pricing is in line with
other 34' yachts from Sabre, Pearson, Tiara and MJM.  And if you
compare our 34 to those boats, we are a raging bargain.
The Buzzards Bay 34 has a very different interior layout over our
previous model.  Island berth, seperate shower stall, improved stowage
capacity and access.  As well as a level of interior finish that puts
her to the top of the class. We're very proud of what we were able to
accomplish with her.  Happy Veterans Day!  Thanks to all who have
served.

Russell,

It sounds like a great boat, but if I want a bunch of marketing I'll come to
your website to get it.  I may be mistaken, but I understood that this forum
was for information exchanges, not for sales pitches.

Bob, and others--

In an earlier post, I did ask Russell Hunt to explain the pricing, so
give him some leeway, please.

Thanks for the update on Buzzards Bay, Russell.

What's the difference between the former 33 and the current 34 and
how does that justify the price tag of $405,000?
I'm not being argumentative, only looking for information.

I did expect to hear some specifics, but Russell chose to answer in
marketing generalities. So no one is the wiser. Too bad.

Fair enough, Georgs.  It is your forum so you have every right to define the
dialogue and I will defer to your judgment.  I too would like to know more
specifics such as:

  • What are some of the material decisions that a boat builder makes, and
    what are the design/cost/construction implications?
  • What design compromises are made to balance cost with performance?
  • How does volume production affect cost and quality?
  • What considerations have to go into buyer customizations, what are some
of the more common customizations, and how do they affect cost?
  • What are some of the business dynamics of launching a new boat design?

In my view Russell only touched on a few of those issues, then launched into
his standard marketing spiel.  I think with this audience, as Rod Gibbons
has learned, respecting us as a somewhat knowledgeable group who wants
specifics rather than spin will prove to be a far more effective 'marketing
strategy' in the long run.

I look forward to getting input from a designer/builder again.  Since the
tragic loss of Malcolm Tennant, this board has lacked that perspective and
I'd gratefully welcome Russell's input in that capacity.  I'd also love to
hear from Chris White, the designer behind the Buzzards Bay and many other
sailing multihulls.  I've spoken with Chris before, and read his outstanding
book, and think he would add a ton to the dialogue.

Georgs, thanks again for hosting this forum.  I find it a valuable addition
to my day.
