John,
I have a current review of the inside and outside transits of New Jersey in the Cruising Section of my personal website; here's a link:
https://gilwellbear.wordpress.com/category/cruising-practica/us-east-coast/new-jersey/ https://gilwellbear.wordpress.com/category/cruising-practica/us-east-coast/new-jersey/. Way too much to summarize here. New Jersey is difficult, but not impossible. Inlets can have very strong cross currents. Winds greatly affect water levels in inside embayments. Tidal currents at inlets must be carefully evaluated against wind conditions.
The most tedious portion of the trip is between Cape May and Atlantic City. It gets slightly from AC to Long Beach Island, and slightly better again to Barnegat Bay. Barnegat is not a problem. Mind the tidal currents in the Point Pleasant Canal.
