Nominate volunteers for City of Destiny Awards by Jan. 18
The deadline to nominate volunteers for the City of Tacoma's 24th annual City of Destiny Awards is fast approaching. Nominations will be accepted through Jan. 18, 2010. These yearly honors promote the importance of community service and recognize individuals and groups who make outstanding contributions in Tacoma.
Nominations are being accepted in the following individual and group categories:

  •     Leadership - There are two awards in this category. One award will be given to one adult and one award will be given to one youth (up to 18 years of age) for individual leadership that inspires others to help meet a need in the community.
    
  •     Sustained Service - There are two awards in this category. One award will be given to one adult and one award will be given to one youth (up to 18 years of age) for dedicated service that benefits the community performed over an extended period of time.
    
  •     Neighborhood Group or Community Partnership - This award will honor a group of volunteers demonstrating teamwork on a project that benefits the community.
    
  •     Corporation or Business - This award honors a corporation or business instrumental in developing or supporting community programs. Requirements for this category include a program that is initiated by management, has voluntary participation and demonstrates the involvement of employees in community activities.
    
  •     Employee Group or Union Group - This award honors employees of businesses, unions or governmental entities instrumental in developing or supporting community or environmental programs. There must be a program that is initiated by employees, has voluntary participation and demonstrates the involvement of employees in community activities.
    
  •     Youth or Young Adult Group - This award recognizes dedicated service performed by a youth or young adult group for a period of time that benefits the community. Nominees must be up to 18 years of age.
    
  •     Environmental Sustainability - This award honors groups or individuals dedicated to improving, conserving or protecting the environment. This category is open to all ages.
    

When the nomination period closes Jan. 18, 2010, the Citizens Recognition Committee - whose members are appointed by the City Council - will review the nominations and select the winners.

The City Council will present the City of Destiny Awards to the winners and recognize nominees at a ceremony on May 11, 2010 at the Stadium High School Auditorium (111 N. E St. in Tacoma).
To obtain a nomination form, call Maria Lee in the City's Community Relations Office at (253) 591-2054, or stop by the office, 733 Market St., Room 11, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can also pick up nomination forms in the City Clerk's Office, Tacoma Municipal Building, 747 Market St., Room 220. City offices will be closed on Jan. 18, 2010 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
