Tacoma, Wash. - Join a Wright Park walking event in celebration of National Walking Day on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at noon, with Downtown On the Go and the American Heart Association, in partnership with Metro Parks. This event will kick off the 2014 Walk Tacoma series sponsored by Franciscan Health Systemhttp://www.fhshealth.org/.
Participants will walk 1.5 miles through Wright Park and the Stadium District with Melissa McGinnis, from Metro Parks, Bill Baarsma, former Tacoma Mayor, and Caroline Swope, from Kingstree Studios, and will learn about the history of Wright Park, Stadium High School, and Stadium District history.
Sponsored by the Stadium Business Districthttp://www.stadiumdistrict.com/, the walk will begin at the south side of Wright Park by the lion sculptures at noon. Walkers will be able to visit booths from 11:30 a.m. until noon to learn more about healthy lifestyles, healthy commutes, and other walking events, and the first 200 walk participants will receive a swag bag. All Walk Tacoma events are free and there is no pre-registration necessary.
"Walk Tacoma is a great way to learn about the history of downtown Tacoma and is ideal for getting out and meeting other like-minded neighbors and community members. These events have seen fantastic growth in the last few years, and they highlight how truly walkable our great downtown is," says Jonah Jensen, Downtown On the Go Board President and Senior Associate at BLRB architects.
Walk Tacoma 2014, sponsored by Franciscan Health System, is an eight-event walking series held on first and third Wednesdays, from April through August. The fun, themed walks, now in their fifth year, encourage downtown employees and residents to exercise and enjoy the outdoors by discovering the different walking routes and parks in downtown Tacoma. The walks are scheduled at the lunch hour and just after work to encourage downtown employees to walk during their workday, whether it is to and from work or at a lunch break.
Walking maps of the routes are available at no cost at Downtown On the Go (950 Pacific Ave, Suite 300), at many downtown businesses, or by contacting Meagan Kula, Downtown On the Go Coordinator, at 253-682-1734 or dotg@tacomachamber.org.
