The Pakenham-Arnprior CBC held on Boxing Day was the compiler's 54th consecutive one. Conditions
were next to ideal, relatively mild (-5 to -4) with light winds. The 32 field observers (ten fewer than usual)
tallied 47 species, a total well below our ten-year average of 55. No new species were added this year but
Short-eared Owl (6th count), Golden Eagle (6th count), Hooded Merganser (9th count), and two Northern
Saw-whet Owls (9th count, ties the record high) were highlights. Notable absentees were Common
Merganser, Snowy Owl, both species of waxwings, and Evening Grosbeak. A full summary of the count can
be found at the Macnamara Field Naturalists' Club website: https://mfnc.ca (look under "Participate").
