Scott,
I'll try to be as unbiased as possible since I own a Nordhavn and am
very familiar with them. It shouldn't be too difficult since Krogen is
also a favorite of mine. I studied the specs on both boats and have
concluded that are equally good passagemakers and choice will boil down
to personal preferences. I would like to comment on a couple of things
that have been brought up.
Displacement: The Nordhavn is listed as full load displacement. The
Krogen is listed as "DWL". I'm not sure what that is, but it may not
be full load. I suspect that they are much closer than the numbers
suggest.
Construction: Krogen is moving much closer to Nordhavn in
construction. The 44 is specified as solid fiberglass with a
vinylester resin below the waterline to prevent blistering just as the
Nordhavn has. In addition, the Krogen has a kevlar layer included.
I'm not sure how much strength that actually adds or if it is even
needed. Two Nordhavn's that I know of have hit reefs at speed without
losing hull integrity.
Range: Both boats have more than adequate range for crossing oceans.
Done Dreamin' just completed more than 2700 miles on less fuel than
either of these boats carry.
Flybridge and price: Once the flybridge option is added to the
Nordhavn 43, I suspect that the price differential between the two
boats is small. I agree that the flybridge is a very desirable item.
On my N50, I did away with dry exhaust to make the best use of a
flybridge.
Aesthetics: The Krogen is a prettier boat. Nordhavn seems to put more
emphasis on function over form, although many would think that makes it
better looking.
Portuguese Bridge: I really like the Portuguese Bridge on my boat.
It is one of the reasons I shied away from the Krogen 48 and picked the
Nordhavn. It is a security blanket and functional protection. But
having one is probably more personal preference than anything.
Pilothouse: Krogen claims to have extended the pilothouse to
accommodate a fixed helm chair, but none of the pictures I have seen
included the chair. They also don't have a table at the settee.
Nordhavn shows pictures including both and seems to have adequate room
for them. I've cruised on boats that didn't have a helm chair and was
uncomfortable, especially in heavy weather. A good helm chair is an
absolute necessity.
Interior: Nobody does the convertible office/guest bedroom better than
Krogen. The Krogen 44 only has one head. The Nordhavn 43 had two
heads, one for guests and one for the owners. The lack of the second
head on the N40 was a huge deal for ladies and was one of the things
that spawned the design of the 43.
We're getting really petty here in trying to pick a better boat. Both
are wonderful long range boats. Differences come down to personal
preferences and an evaluation of how well you think you could work with
each company. I suspect resale value on each boat will also be
comparable. Both of these boats are the best bang for the buck,
considering what they do, on the market today.
Sincerely,
Phil Eslinger
