Why "ugly" art?
A lot of times we can get in our own way when it comes to creative
expression. The desire for our art to be liked can lead to us feeling
trapped in a style we aren't excited about anymore, unsure how to tap into
inspiration, hyper critical of ourselves, or completely avoidant of art
altogether. We can fall into the thinking that "art" looks a certain way and
that if we do not align with that category, then we will be failures. Not
exactly a thriving environment for curiosity and creativity.
In my four years of integrating ugly art as a tool in my creative practice,
I have found that making ugly art on purpose can:
- Bring you to the table
- Relieve unrealistic expectations
- Increase authentic expression
- Weave play and joy back into your art
Through the Tacoma Library, I am offering ugly art workshops with the
intention of helping you tap into your deepest creative intuition, while
tending to your nervous system and the inner critic, using intentionally
ugly art. I hope you'll find, as I did, that in embracing the ugly in your
art, you can embrace all parts of yourself and give them space to breathe
and a space to thrive (in all their ugly glory) on the page.
I hope to see you there!
