Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) maintains records in a 50km radius of MacDonald Park, Kingston. Birders using eBird are encouraged to share their sightings with 'Kingston FN'. Highlights: It was a reasonable week in the area with the record-breaking cold temperatures and snowfall finally bringing birds to feeders and roadsides. Please note that the privately-owned Owl Woods will be closed from 18th November to 8th December inclusive. Here are the highlights of the last week: CACKLING GOOSE - a single bird was seen on Amherst Island on 9th. TRUMPETER SWAN - despite ponds and lakes starting to freeze up, records of this species only came from Charleston Lake Provincial Park on 12th and Bedford Mills on 9th. CANVASBACK - there was just 1 bird noted this week, at Marshlands CA, Kingston, on 10th. SURF SCOTER - not a common bird in these parts, 3 males were seen on Amherst Island on 9th. BARROW'S GOLDENEYE - a female was reported from Amherst Island on 3rd but details are still pending. RUDDY DUCK - just a single record this week of 8 at Cataraqui Bay, Kingston, on 10th. SANDHILL CRANE - an immature bird was photographed on Wolfe Island on 10th with 29 seen near Lansdowne on 12th. OSPREY - a late bird was seen at Loughborough Lake on 9th. SNOWY OWL - the first bird of the season was seen on Wolfe Island on 13th, with a second there on 15th. COMMON REDPOLL - the first birds of the season (15) were seen at Parrott's Bay on 15th. RED CROSSBILL - a single bird was noted at a private location near Verona on 13th. LAPLAND LONGSPUR - there were widespread observations on Wolfe Island this week, in low numbers, with an additional 3 seen near Lansdowne on 11th and 15th. SNOW BUNTING - birds appear to be widespread on both Wolfe and Amherst islands, with a few scattered inland records earlier in the week. SAVANNAH SPARROW - 3 birds were still present on Wolfe island on 13th.
