Policies on Recording Social Worker Interviews for Child Abuse

Hello all,

A colleague represents a local government that does not have a policy in place addressing what a social worker should do if a parent wants to record an interview. They are wondering if other cities/counites have any policy addressing this issue.

The law is not very clear if a parent may record a social worker without the worker's consent, but they tend to believe they can record because social workers are government officials.  Child abuse investigations and all related case and court files are protected by very strict confidentiality laws and any release of info typically requires court authorization, but the local government attorney does not think these confidentiality laws prevent a parent from making recordings, they just prevent what someone can do with the recordings.

If you can share your local policy or if you have information on this, please send it to me at rarneja@imla.orgmailto:rarneja@imla.org and I'll pass it along.

Thank you,
