Glenn,

On Chrysalis, we also use TidesMarine SureSeal.  Zero maintenance.  In
order to install them in a canoe hull, Chrysalis has the Tennant canoe
hull, I glassed in a new bulkhead approx. 4' forward of the stern.  I
then glassed in a fiberglass stern tube.  This provided a large, 12"
wide, area to install the SureSeal.  I would recomment putting an extra
lip seal on the shaft so that if you do have a problem, you can just cut
off the old and slide down the new.

Its worth a call to Tides Marine to see what they suggest.
These guys know their products and what has worked (and not worked) in
many boats.  My PDQ 34 powercat seals were replaced after 6 years by a
Tides vendor who selected the blue SureSeals with the spare seal on
the shaft.  Worked fine at slow - moderate RPMs, but leaked badly at
high RPMs. A phone call to Tides about warranty revealed that they do
NOT recommend SureSeal for the PDQ/Yanmar set up.  Switched back to
the red boot seals and they work fine.  Tides even provided these to
me at no charge because it was not my fault, but rather the error of
the marine shop - - no hassle, just excellent customer service.
