8/2. Milford, Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center. 9:35am-10:45am. sunny,
72F, mid-tide.
Still lots of activity with our enthusiastic campers.
Many of our Purple martins have fledged with a few gourds still having
nestlings. One vireo- I believe a Blue headed vireo (white eye ring with
yellow belly ,grayish back) sitting in tree with some fledgling Purple
Martins. Our osprey juveniles are busy eating their fish, with several
adults( probably from other local nests) carrying fish. A pair of Mute
swans with one cygnet on the marsh , along with Snowy and Great Egrets.
Along the Long Island sound side- about 40 Ruddy turnstones, estimates of
40 Semipalmated plovers and a hundred Semipalmated sandpipers, about 5
Least Sandpipers, and 15 Least terns. I was chatting with a father & son
who were visiting from Pennsylvania- very experienced birders. The boy
said - "There's got to be at least one Western Sandpiper here". :)
