TWL: Coaster 40 by Michael Kasten

Fromtime to time, many of us have bemoaned the high cost of new trawlers.

Here's interesting design in aluminum by Michael Kasten that might be built
professionally for under $300K, perhaps just under $10 per pound of
displacement at half load.

It's being drawn to your attention strictly FYI, with no endorsement
intended, and no commercial interest on my part.

I thought you might like to see some recent progress on a 40' aluminum two
stateroom trawler currently under construction. This is my 40' Coaster
design being built at Reyse Marine in Surrey, BC.

Once the design was completed, I detailed and nested all the parts for NC
cutting.  I then emailed the NC cut files to Northwest Plasma in Seattle.
NW Plasma pre cut all the parts and shipped them on pallets to Reyse.  This
is very much the same process we used for Boojum.

As you can see from the enclosed pics, the frame of the Coaster 40 is
complete and the plating is now nearly all installed.  NC cutting provided a
precise fit for all the parts, and has allowed Reyse to reduce fabrication
labor by a significant amount as compared to manual lofting and cutting.

FYI - The Coaster was estimated for construction at around USD $280k by two
separate yards in BC, and at around USD $250 by two other yards in New
Zealand. This is for a turn-key finished boat with all the specified
equipment.

Although systems were intentionally kept relatively simple, we will end up
with a nicely finished vessel complete with integral fuel tanks, paravane
rig, hydraulic windlass and bow thruster, plus the usual complement of
electronics (radar, etc.) and conveniences, such as washer / dryer.  Power
is provided by a John Deere 4045 DFM.

Coaster is certainly an economical vessel...

Best regards,
Michael Kasten

Briefly 'coz I know this subject has been extensively discussed, can anyone
suggest a diesel pump (12v) that will
pump at less than 5L/min?

I have a 900MA Racor and the max flow is 340L/hr. In wondering about using
such a low capacity pump, I'm
assuming that the element might get damaged if one were to apply too much
vacum to the outlet port.

My main fuel transfer pump is a beefy 19L/min type (it lifts into the
day-tank) and my first thought was to plumb that
in 'polishing' mode on each of the bilge tanks but..... is that capacity
likely to damage the Racor filter elements?

Almost everyone I know uses the 40 GPH (150 LPH) Walbro diesel transfer
pump with no problems.  You can get details on Charles Bell's web site
at www.fuelpolishing.com.
