We also estimate the current speed by subtracting 'how fast we should be
going' at a certain RPM but once in a while we put it in neutral and let
the current take control and see what the GPS says our SOG is. I have never
seen more than 3 knots. This is consistent with the newest NOAA beta
current predictor in which I can not find any predictions greater than 3.1
knots for the Cape Fear River. Also if one googles 'fastest currents in
North America' a list of the top 50 is included. They range from around 9
knots to around 4. The Cape Fear River does not make the list.
