Welcome, William!

If you care to, how about a few words of introduction about yourself to
introduce yourself to our online community?

What's your interest in power catamarans? What's your background in boating?

Glad to have you aboard.

Georgs et al,

Am new to the Cat world and am in the process of buying a Glacier Bay power
cat to move to Thailand.  I am also building a house in Koh Samui, Thailand
and will likely be settling down there as my working career begins to slow
down.
Presently am working in Vietnam, and am starting to miss the offshore sailing
world.

i intend to use this for a fair bit offshore fishiing and diving.

Regards,

Steve Deetz

Thank you Georgs, for the welcome.

I come from Queensland, Australia where we have boating waters that will
rival anything. (some of you may have heard of the Great Barrier Reef).

I have had a long interest in boating.  Whilst I have done a little
sailing, my main interest is with power boats and now that I am getting
older, I will soon retire and my income will reduce to a pension, so I am
leaning toward the economical "Trawler Cat" style.

I have family who live in Brisbane, Qld and Karratha, W.A.  These places are
on the coast and are about 6,000 Kilometres (about 4000 Miles) apart.  (You
can easily find  them on Google)

My intent is to buy a suitable boat and spend the rest of my days slowly
making my way from one place to the other, visiting Grandchildren.

The route could take a circumnavigation of the whole continent, but the
southern section does not afford the sheltered bays and islands that the
north section has and worse still, it takes in the Southern Antarctic Ocean
and its notorious bad weather and winds and the worst thing for me ... cold
weather ...

However from Brisbane to the north, beckons like the proverbial "siren".
The fabled South Pacific Ocean which includes the Coral Sea, the Great
Barrier Reef and from there, miles and miles of tropical coastline and
finally the Indian Ocean and the Kimberly region of W.A. to Karratha.

This whole region is subject to tropical storms (we call them Cyclones, you
call them Hurricanes) from  November to April so one would plan to leave
Brisbane in April and be in Karratha by November where I will "anchor-up"
near the grandchildren until the following April, when it will be time again
to retrace my steps to see my other Grandchildren in Brisbane.  Return trip
2 years.

Currently I am putting stuff into place.  I have some property to be sold in
order to finance the boat purchase etc.

What sort of boat ???

Sail is not an option because even though it may be very economical, I am
getting older every day and I realise that while it may be easy for an old
bloke to move around the deck, dodging spars and rigging in calm weather, it
may become impossible in a blow.

So that leaves the trusty old "cast iron" sail as my only option.

The intended area is littered with reefs, tropical islands and mangrove
creeks  and some of the biggest tides in the world.  All tides are more than
2 Metre (6 ft), 4 and 5 metre tides (12 to 15 ft) are common and Broome W.A.
experiences 12 Metre tides (40 yes, 40 ft) so a shallow draft boat will
allow much more exploratory access to the shore because it could be allowed
to sit on the hard, to await the return of the tide.

Also a lot of reef lagoons can only be accessed by carefully entering over
the reef at high tide.  Once inside there is invariably a sandy bottomed
haven.  A boat with even a modest draft of 1 and a half metres (5ft) would
be excluded from exploring these areas.

Also some of the  area is quite remote and accessibility of expert repairs
will be few and far, therefore twin engines will give good redundancy.

If one puts all these together a Trawler Cat seems ideal .........

So that sums me up.  I would be very grateful if anyone has any ideas or
views for a suitable type of boat

William is my name but everyone calls me Henry

Sorry my name is Marvin, but I am new to the site, but not new to the sport.
I have been a boater for 72 years, and have several cats over the years and
have always loved them even when they were not popular. My problem is that I
cant seem to own less then six boats at anyone time, I fined that if I sell
one I always replace it.
My longest cruse was two years from Lk Superior to Central America and
back, and yes I would love to do it again. Now if I could just sell a few
boats and buy a new Cat. Hmmm
