Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsTo Begin, The subject line is wrong. It was the U.S. rules on Lake
Champlain that required hose removal.
Regarding the statement ". You WILL be boarded, perhaps more than once,..."
As far as inland waters and Great Lakes, things have changed,
.......Homeland security seems to have a lot of other things on their mind, primarily
going for job justification looking for numbers of stops.
Have never been actually boarded in 25 plus years. That includes the
Hudson River, and all of the canals.
I suppose at this point...knock on wood.
Have had the USCG (one hot rod coxwain) or Homeland inepts; Pull along
side and question while I kept moving (twice). Checked out at a dock (polite
conversation) twice, once on Lk. Erie and once on the NY canals. Once was
used as target practice by repeated pulling alongside by an in training
coxwain on Lk. Huron. I had to call them and ask what was up.

We have cruised in the North Channel and Georgian Bay four times in the past eight years. We were boarded off shore once and boarded at dock once. We were never asked about about our waste connections. They didn't even care about the amount of alcohol on board. They were concerned about weapons.

We were stopped by a Canadian police boat while on the Bay of Quinte
(between Kingston ON and the Trent River). He came alongside and talked with
us for about 30 minutes. There were 2 officers on the boat. We talked about
doing the Loop and lots of other interesting chit chat. He never boarded us.
After about 30 min of chit chat, I finally (politely) asked him what was his
reason for stopping us since he didn't board us. He smiled and said "safety
check... but since you are doing The Loop, I know your safety stuff is all
in order."
Then he left.
