My wife and I are looking for a 40 to 50 foot power cat that can be beached.

We have a beautiful oceanfront property in Vancouver, Canada, but typically
have 15 foot tides which, at low tide, leave about a mile of silty sand in
front of our house.  We would like a power cat that we can moor in front of
our house, so the drives have to either be legs that we can raise, or ?????

Any suggestions????

The ability to beach a power catamaran is something that a lot of designers
and builders have seized upon,  the platform is so naturally stable when dry
that it is a tempting proposition, either as a safety protection during an
accidental grounding,  for a quick hull inspection or as in your case a stay
overnight on the dry.

Particularly displacement style power catamarans, but not exclusively, the
running gear ends up well protected behind the lower portion of the hull
allowing conventional drives and rudders rather than having to go for stern
legs or similar.

One thing to keep in mind, depending on what sort of boat you are thinking
of getting, a 50 foot vessel can have significant displacement, and if the
boat is going to be left of a mud berth, you need to consider the loads when
the boat is only just still afloat and you are on a lee shore.  This
bouncing can be significant load, and you are not talking a once or twice
occurrence in the life time of the boat but something that could happen
several times a year, depending on the anchorage of course.  There are
plenty of sheltered little inlets inside the Island that I am sure never see
much of sea at all!  So it depends on the location

Might also be a good application for some of the 'permanent' antifoul
products with the Copper filled resins such as Coppercoat and others?  Has
anybody had much first hand experience with these products.

Failing that, a mile of silty mud might be a good place for a Sealegs
http://www.sealegs.com/ on the back lawn!

Kind regards
Tony Stanton

Hi Randy

While you are looking at the endevour and main cat for beachable cats there is
also another manufacturer in the this using a combination of designs from
Malcolm Tenants hull design to the sleek looks from the Schoining stable. The
manufacturer is Cruiser Cats and they manufacture a 38' and 42' Powercats. the
address is www.cruisercats.com . The boats are built using diesel inboard with
straight shafts and the running gear is up and protected by the hull but the
advice given on what to consider in your area nad the wieght of the vessel and
tides and the intakes are very important.

We sat on the bottom at Moraine Cay Abacos a couple of months back
(inadvertently)  in our endeavour 48 with no ill effect.
It was handy for discouraging the sharks when spear fishing.
