City Council seeks applicants for Sustainable Tacoma Commission
Citizens who want to work with the City to increase sustainability and oversee the implementation of the City's aggressive greenhouse gas reduction goals are encouraged to apply for membership on the Sustainable Tacoma Commission by May 14th.
Formed in 2009 in response to the City's first Climate Action Plan, the Sustainable Tacoma Commission is a great opportunity to connect and collaborate with other citizens working in environmental stewardship, communicate sustainability goals to City Council, work with the Office of Environmental Policy and Sustainability to oversee the City's programs promoting sustainability, and dedicate time and energy to making Tacoma a more environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable community.
The Tacoma City Council is looking to fill three seats: one new 3-year term, one unexpired 2-year term, and one unexpired 1-year term. The Council is seeking members who provide a balanced representation of various stakeholders, including the environmental community, small business, labor, housing, industry and port, transportation, education, the building industry and residents.
Duties of the Sustainable Tacoma Commission include:
- Coordinate with the Office of Sustainability to oversee the City's sustainability programs and greenhouse gas reduction goals.
- Provide annual progress reports to the public.
- Communicate barriers to and incentives for implementation to the City Council.
- Create a forum for regular public comment and community involvement.
