Hello, Chris. I'm very glad that you wrote. I love this engine and had
considered using it for my boat. It used to be a common engine in all sorts
of trucks and heavy equipment; but I understand that it is now only
available for the marine market. According to my Detroit dealer, that is
the only application for which it will pass the EPA clean air requirements
in the USA. The reason that Detroit kept it around for the marine market is
because it is a very easy drop in replacement for a large automotive V8
gasoline engine. It is still available in other countries for other
applications, but is only used for boats in the USA. It used to be a very
excellent engine in the Industrial/Commercial world; though I have never
seen one with a turbo charger on it. According to my Detroit book, it is
available in a number of configurations between 200 and 300 hp.

FWIW, we average something like 3-5 gph for a whole season, depending. I
haven't been able to do any better estimation than that, 'cause I don't
hardly use enough diesel in any given run to make it worthwhile to refuel
after a cruising leg at a constant known-speed.
This tells me that you are pulling an average of only 60 - 100 hp out of
this engine. You must be running at the lower end of your cruising speed
most of the time. Do I understand this correctly?
Perhaps you might be so good as to answer a few more questions concerning
this engine?
How long have you had it?
How do you normally use it?
How many hours do you have on it?
What sort to troubles have you had with it?
Thanks again for writing. I appreciate the information.
