Several have asked: "What size cleats should I have?"

Cleat length should be a minimum of 12x the diameter of the largest rope used on them, 14x if two lines will be attached. For other belay points, their strength should 2x the greatest load and be a minimum of 4x in diameter as is the line's diameter. Fastener for belaying points, as well as for windlasses should be 3x the highest load. Never leave the load on the gypsy or warping drum, instead, transfer it to a belaying point with the use of a snubber or bridle, both sized for the highest load. Chocks, too, should conform to this, keeping in mind that for heavy weather, larger lines and more than one layer of anti-chafe material will likely be needed- size appropriately for dimensions and strength. If your boat's gear doesn't conform, make it so before the storm, or if not, before the next storm.
