Here is yesterday’s update from CEF.

Also, the President’s FY18 “skinny budget” was released this morning — really this is like a budget highlights type of document you typically see released along with all the other budget documents in normal years.

There is — unsurprisingly — no mention adult education in the education section, so we’ll have to wait until the full budget is released to see what is in store for us. But I encourage you to skim through the document and share with the list any cuts to programs important to you.

Dear CEF Members:

I.              Advocacy

·      Friday meeting to share information on the President’s FY 2018 budget – The President’s “skinny” budget request for discretionary programs will be released tomorrow.  We don’t yet know how much programmatic detail will be in the budget, but Friday’s CEF meeting (9-11 am at AFSCME, 1625 L St NW, 1st Floor Board Room) is a useful opportunity to share information with each other.  We will provide budget tables with whatever level of detail is available.  Please plan to attend if you can!

II.            Policy Intelligence and Education News

·      Upcoming Labor-HHS-ED hearings – The House Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Subcommittee has scheduled three education-related hearings, all in room in 2358-C Rayburn House Office Building, and all will be available on webcast. We’ll be monitoring all of these hearings for relevant intel
o  “Investing in the Future – Early Childhood Education Programs at the Department of Health and Human Services” on Thursday, March 16 at 10 am
o  “Budget Hearing – Department of Education” with Secretary DeVos testifying on Wednesday, March 22 at 10 am
o  “Budget Hearing - Corporation for Public Broadcasting” rescheduled for Tuesday, March 28 at 10 am

The Senate Labor-HHS-Ed Appropriations Subcommittee held a hearing this morning at 10:30 am in 138 Dirksen Senate Office Building. The hearing is titled “STEM Education: Preparing Students for the Careers of Today and the Future.”

III.        Events

·      AERA Centennial Lecture The Limits of Schooling, The Power of Poverty http://www.aera100.net/charles-payne.html – the lecture will take place in Detroit on Thursday, March 23, at 6:30 pm ET, and will be available via live stream.

·      CEF schedule for the next month – (Note: this information is also on the CEF calendar in the Members’ Area of our new website. You can register for an ID to log in if you have already submitted your 2017 membership renewal forms.)
o  Friday, March 17, 9-11 am: CEF meeting (AFSCME, 1625 L St NW, 1st Floor Board Room).  Review of President’s budget outline.
o  Friday, March 24, 9-11 am: Quarterly meeting (AFT, 555 NJ Ave, NW, 4th floor)
o  Friday, March 31, 9-11 am: CEF meeting (AASCU, 1307 NY Ave, NW).  Guest speakers: Democratic staff of the House Education and the Workforce Committee.
o  Friday, April 7, 9-11 am: CEF meeting (AFSCME, 1625 L St NW, 1st Floor Board Room).  Guest speaker: Robin Juliano, Democratic education staffer for the House Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Subcommittee.
