Good Morning Fellows,
In case you missed it, below is a brief summary of the initiatives discussed during yesterday's conference call.
IMLA Fellows Conference Call
Monday, November 2, 2015
Meeting Summary
Bi-monthly conference calls for Fellows
Better Recognition of Fellows
Fellows Mentoring Program
Fellows to Present IMLA Webinars
Fellows Column in Municipal Lawyer Magazine
Creation of Subcommittees
If you are interested in signing up for a subcommittee, please email TukieFalade@imla.orgmailto:TukieFalade@imla.org
Tabled for Further Discussion
Should IMLA seek to have the Fellows program certified by the ABA?
* Not likely as currently structured due to IMLA membership requirements, attendance policy and need to determine if open book testing would be allowed.
* Need to determine what advantage gained by ABA certification as states vary Rule 7.4 extensively.
Alternatively, if an attorney is certified by a state, can the attorney be recognized by IMLA?
* Need to research which states recognize specialization in local government law and incorporate state requirements with IMLA standards.
* Need to determine advantages and disadvantages to IMLA program.
Best,

Good Morning Fellows,

IMLA Fellows Conference Call
Monday, November 2, 2015
Meeting Summary
Bi-monthly conference calls for Fellows
Going forward, IMLA will host a conference call for Fellows every other month.
Calls will be held on Mondays at 1:00pm EDT (subject to change)
The next call will be in January 2016 - Exact date forthcoming.
Better Recognition of Fellows
IMLA will implement the following initiatives:
Listing Fellows on IMLA’s website
Creating a Fellows reception at live events where new and recertified fellows will be recognized, subject to logistical limitations.
1st time attendees will also be invited to attend.
Providing drink tickets for Fellows at live events
Providing different colored name tags for Fellows at live events.
Fellows Mentoring Program
Fellows have asked to serve as mentors to new/young city attorneys and IMLA will develop a proposal for implementing this for approval by the Fellows. In order to create a proposal, we need to gauge the level of interest from the group. If you would be interested in serving as a mentor, please e-mail TukieFalade@imla.org.
Fellows to Present IMLA Webinars
The group discussed hosting a webinar aimed at providing guidance to new city attorneys. We need 2-3 volunteers to present the webinar. If you are interested in participating, please e-mail TukieFalade@imla.org.
May consider a second webinar aimed at assistant city attorneys.
Fellows Column in Municipal Lawyer Magazine
The group discussed instituting a Fellows column in the ML magazine. Each issue of the magazine would feature a short piece written by a Fellow. (e.g. “10 Best Practices”).
Target date for first article is the January edition of ML subject to logistical limitations.
If you are interested, please e-mail TukieFalade@imla.org .
We also discussed making participation and publication a requirement of recertification.
Creation of Subcommittees
The group discussed creation of three subcommittees in addition to the Exam and Certification subcommittees
Program Subcommittee – group will work on developing content/programming for live events, webinars and IMLA publications.
Speakers Bureau Subcommittee – group will assist with populating and managing a database of individuals available to speak on certain topics.
Law Office Certification Subcommittee – committee will develop standards and a program for certification of a law office.
Exam and Certification subcommittee – these committees will continue as they are.
If you are interested in signing up for a subcommittee, please email TukieFalade@imla.org
