I think the main problem with using an outboard as a get home drive, at

least on a diesel powered boat, is carrying enough gasoline to actually get
home<

Yanmar makes 2 different size diesel outboards, 27 hp and a larger one

Ron Rogers original message was, "Wouldn't an outboard, perhaps the one used
for the dinghy, have adequate thrust?

The Yanmar D27 (the smaller outboard) starts at 207 lbs, which is a
challenge for a dinghy which could be carried onboard a 29' boat.

It is true that if Georgs wanted to travel to a country where the Yanmar D27
is available and fork over 8+ boat units (or ebay), the Yanmar D27 would
make a capable get home drive. However, he'd need a smaller outboard for his
dinghy and a davit to lift the D27, so it isn't the simple approach Georgs
indicated a preference for.

Another problem with outboards as get-home power... For one, how do you
mount it? If it's not permanently attached via some arrangement on the stern
(and how do you do that?) you'll have to deploy it when you need it. Now I'd
be willing to bet that you'll need this in some pretty bad weather, and
whether you can safely and physically get out there and mount it is
problematic. Another problem is that is same weather, the prop (and cooling
water intake) will probably be out of the water a fair amount of time due to
the motion of the boat in the waves. Not good either.

Wing engine, or maybe even an electric motor for a wing drive that could be
run off the genset are probably your best bets, assuming you can't rig a
sail.

Keith,

If you will open your West, Boat US, or Defender hymnals, you will find
suitable mounts with a broad range of travel. The outboard can also be
ordered with a suitable long shaft.
