Nordhavn owners: Does PAE make their own paravane rigs at the yards in
Taiwan/China, or do they get them from a US manufacturer/supplier?

Our Nordhavn 43 came from Taiwan with only the base mount points for the
paravanes. The paravane parts arrived during commissioning in Dana Point
California, and were subsequently installed there. I believe they get them
from the USA from Prime Manufacturing.

It was fun seeing the large pile of parts turn into the paravanes. They
instantly make the boat look more seaworthy/salty, as well as create a
conversation starter. So far I have been honest explaining their purpose,
but I am tempted to claim they are something more exotic. Some thoughts that
come to mind: a towed sonar array, sunken treasure retrieval system, rigging
for giant squid hunting, and missile defense system.

Prime Fabrication does even mention them on their website. Perhaps they
don't want to get involved in specing them out for a wide variety of boat.
They do advertise at anchor roll stabilizers.

I'd stick with the giant squid or sonar story. Of course, you are ignoring
their real world application on minesweepers (called paravanes.) You are a
clandestine Navy minesweeper! That is why so many Nordhavns are colored
light gray.

Paravanes truly are a conversation starter and discussion item. After two
years in the Med we have gotten pretty good with a little language and a lot
of arm waving describing them for those that are interested.

One Italian - after listening to the description of what they do, said -
they won't work here.  I had no reply for that, at least not in Italian.
