Again, Bob is drawing a conclusion on his experience with old technology
outdrives, and not taking into consideration the new technology. It would be
the same as judging outboards based on their reliability and fuel economy of
just five years ago, no comparison! Bob I suggest you take a ride in a boat
with the latest Volvo has to offer.

Bob Austin,

Come on up to Juneau in a couple months and you can take a ride on my new
Volvo diesel outdrive-powered cat.  Before going that route I heard all of
the same opinions that are being presented here.  I talked to a lot of
outdrive owners, mechanics, etc.  After very careful consideration I decided
the outdrive benefits outweighed the risks.  That's for the new generation
of Volvo outdrives - I would not have reached that conclusion with the older
versions.  Just like you wouldn't choose old 2-stroke outboards.

The main deciding factor was fuel economy.  My new boat will be double the
displacement of my old one, much larger in every respect, though the hull
design and construction are similar.  But I expect to see nearly the same
fuel economy with this new boat as my old boat with its modern 4-stroke
outboards and expensive stainless props.

I'll report my findings.
