Our office (Edmonton, Alberta) allows and encourages lawyers to volunteer at the Edmonton Community Legal Clinic. They take pro bono work that isn't otherwise covered by legal aid. The insurance is covered by the Law Society so the municipality doesn't need to worry about insuring the pro bono work. The lawyers who do it here find it very rewarding. We don't have an official policy but it is encouraged through our professional development planning. I would appreciate looking at policies that any of you may have.
