Winter Birders,
Temps were rather low today for December - 25 degrees F and winds were strong
over the onion fields with drifting snow hampering our driving down some of
the roads. On Mersea "D", across from house #1534 we found 4 Northern Harriers
sitting in the field. All were rather close to each other and at one time
two seemed to be pecking at food, sharing? Very odd. One Harrier was an adult
male with a beautiful gray coat of feathers. Many more Harriers were spotted
during our road-trip along with a Rough-legged Hawk.
Farther down "D" at the stop sign where it intersects with 19 (this area has
a small red barn and was a hunting spot for the Swainson's Hawk last spring)
we found a good number of Snow Buntings in the field adjacent to the barn. I'd
estimate at least 300.
Good winter birding to all and Happy Holidays.
