Scholarly Selections January: “The 1904 Wreck of the SS Clallam” with Erik Kosick https://www.washingtonhistory.org/event/scholarly-selections-jan-2024/
Thursday, January 18, 6:00 to 7:30 PM
FREE

120 years ago this January, the 6-month-old steamship Clallam sank in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, resulting in the deaths of at least 56 people. The aftermath was one of the largest scandals in Washington State and British Columbia and led to sweeping reforms on both sides of the border.

Presenter Erik Kosick has been researching the Clallam tragedy for over a decade and will take you through the steamship’s short life, including its final voyage. Through rarely seen photographs, artifacts, and stories of the Clallam’s passengers and crew, return to 1904 to see how this nearly forgotten shipwreck dramatically altered the Pacific Northwest’s maritime industry.
