Drought threatens to halt critical barge traffic on Mississippi

This article in today's Washington Post indicates that the Coast Guard
allows only one-way traffic on the Mississippi River between St. Louis
and Cairo, Illinois, for eight hours a day.

Wonder how that will affect larger pleasure boats on the river if that
restriction continues throughout the summer and next fall?

Interesting article. Thanks for providing it !
The situation gives the guvment plenty of opportunity to screw things up and
invoke the Law of Unintended Consequences. This is precisely what happened
at Hoppies when they built the nearby groin intending to keep the river
deep. The article said they were removing rock but didn't specify where or
what. With Congressional pressure on the Army Corps of Engineers, they are
more likely to try solutions that have never before been tried NOR TESTED.
Hence, it becomes a big live experiment in real time.
My guess is that next year's summer water level will be dependent upon the
snow falls this winter that melt in the Spring.
R.

Seems to me that there are a lot more important issues at hand than the movement of pleasure boats.
