Beam to length

It is more important to have the right beam to length ratio of each hull for
efficiency. You must design the desired accommodation and deck layout which
will give a start to you weight calculation.  It is generally considered that
a hull beam to length of 14 -17 to 1 is optimal. Malcolm chime in here.  With
this in mind you can play with the whole boat length to beam.  I like to keep
the boat as narrow as you can within reason, for dockage, structural strength
and weight consideration.  The loss from having the hulls too close will be a
lot less than not having the right beam to length of the hulls.  I think most
designs up to 50'+ would not have to be over 20' wide.  The over all width of
the boat is not to be confused with hull center lines which is actually where
the rubber hits the road.

What is the correct way to describe to distance between the center
line of the hulls? There must be a specific term to set that
measurement apart from the more common "beam."

Cort, Malcolm, anyone?
