NORDHAVN TO SPONSOR TRANSATLANTIC CRUISE IN COMPANY
More trawler yachts will cross the Atlantic Ocean in less than 60 days in
the summer of 2004 than have done so in the last 60 years.
What will enable so many ordinary people to undertake such an extraordinary
adventure? The answer is the first Nordhavn Atlantic Rally, sponsored by
Pacific Asian Enterprises (PAE), builders of the leading make of power
passagemakers.
Thirty or more Nordhavns are expected to make the 3,700-nautical-mile
passage from Rhode Island to Mallorca in the Mediterranean Sea via Bermuda
and the Azores.
Other makes may be permitted to join the rally, depending upon interest.
Coming in the wake of the recent circumnavigation of the world by a
Nordhavn 40, the rally is certain to promote passagemaking under power as
it never has been promoted before, and quite likely increase Nordhavn's
share of the market in which it already has a commanding presence.
"Every Nordhavn owner we've talked to so far says they want to
participate," says Jim Leishman, a principal in PAE. "We can easily see 20
to 30 Nordhavns taking part, and possibly more. We see the rally as being
an even more significant event than our around-the-world project."
PAE plans to make the transatlantic crossing as easy and safe as it
possibly can be.
The fleet will run in convoy fashion with one escort vessel in the lead and
another following. The owners of two Nordhavn 62s have already volunteered
for escort duty.
On board the escort vessels will be support teams of PAE employees and
associates. Using high-speed RIBs, they'll be able to quickly reach any
vessel needing assistance.
"We don't expect any major mechanical problems, but even after proper
preparation and a thorough inspection, something could happen," Leishman
says. "An engine could overheat, a watermaker could fail, we'll be ready
for any eventuality."
The escort vessels will carry emergency fuel reserves with boat-to-boat
transfer capability, and they'll be able to provide towing if needed. The
escort crew will include a diver for underwater inspection and repairs, and
an emergency medicine specialist.
There will be daily roll calls and daily weather briefings for the fleet.
Designated VHF and SSB frequencies will be monitored around the clock.
PAE shoreside staff at Bermuda, Azores and Mallorca will assist owners with
government formalities, provisioning, refueling, and organize parties and
other group activities.
PAE will also arrange for special group rates for return trips aboard Dock
Express ships.
BUDDY BOAT CONCEPT GOES TRANSATLANTIC
Here is how Jim Leishman explains the rally program:
"The summer will begin with a rendezvous at our Portsmouth, Rhode Island,
office beginning May 20. Each vessel participating will be required to pass
a comprehensive inspection for condition and to meet minimum equipment
requirements.
"The fleet will travel within two groups, dictated by the vessel's speed
capability and the owner's desire. Larger Nordhavns may elect to travel up
to nine knots while the smaller vessels will run slower, particularly on
the mid-Atlantic passage. The two groups will stay together with their
respective escort vessel. During the day, vessels may run close together,
sometimes closing to within a hundred yards. During the night, in reduced
visibility or during periods of rough weather, greater separation will be
maintained. In no case should each group open up to more than seven or
eight miles from the lead to trailing vessel. This will insure complete VHF
radio coverage. Departure times of each group will allow the entire fleet
to arrive at each destination together.
"June 1 will be targeted as a weather-permitting departure date for the
600-mile voyage to Hamilton, Bermuda. PAE staff will await arrival of the
fleet and provide assistance with government formalities, provisioning and
refueling. PAE will provide technical and mechanical assistance as needed
by members of the fleet as well as acquiring and shipping any parts
required. The two escort vessels will inventory a wide variety of spare
parts and have the tools on hand to deal with most problems that might
occur. The fleet will enjoy approximately one week in port with numerous
group activities planned.
http://www.bermudatourism.com
"June 15 will be targeted as a weather-permitting departure date for the
1,800 mile passage to Horta within the Azores Island group. This passage
will be completed by the larger Nordhavns in as little as eight days while
the smaller boats will take as long as much as 11 days. As done in Bermuda,
PAE shoreside staff will be on hand to assist and welcome our fleet into
port and to arrange for shoreside activities and fleet parties.
http://www.drtacores.pt
"Weather permitting, the fleet will leave Horta on July 10 for the last leg
across the Atlantic, into the Mediterranean and on to Palma de Mallorca,
Spain, a distance of 1,300 miles. After lots of celebration and fun, the
official Nordhavn Atlantic Rally will end and each Nordhavn will be in
position to enjoy the Mediterranean individually or within groups."
http://www.a-palma.es
PAE has negotiated discounted return shipping rates, providing
transatlantic service from Europe to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, as an option
to rally participants. One return sailing will be in October, 2004, the
other one year later for those wishing to cruise the Med after the rally.

All entries will be by application only, and the number of entries will be
limited. There will be an entry fee of several thousand dollars. To request
a provisional entry form, contact Jim Leishman at PAE

TRANSATLANTIC TRAWLER RALLY ON TELEVISION
In order to promote passagemaking under power widely, PAE is looking into
the possiblity of developing a television program on the rally and the
adventure of a lifetime it will represent for more than 100 owners, crews
and guests.
PAE has asked Bruce Kessler for advice on how best to proceed. Kessler, who
circumnavigated the world with Zopilote in the early 1990s, is a retired
television and film director with a long list of credits. In 1998, he was
named the Trawler World Passagemaker of the Year.

KANALOA COMPLETES CIRCUMNAVIGATION OF THE WORLD
Heidi and Wolfgang Hass completed a six-year circumnavigation of the world
when they returned to Dana Point, California, on November 15 aboard
Kanaloa, a Nordhavn 46. They previously circumnavigated on a 38-foot
sailboat--in a leisurely 15-1/2 years.
They have no plans to return to their native Germany any time soon.
"We'll leave Dana Point next year again for the South Pacific and plan to
circumnavigate Australia," Heidi says. "That will be a challenge. Our
permanent base will be Australia, our cruising grounds, Asia and the
Pacific Islands. We plan to live on our boat for many more years to come."
Pacific Asian Enterprises, builders of Nordhavn, threw a dock party for the
Hasses upon their arrival in Dana Point. No one in attendance could believe
Kanaloa had just returned from voyaging for six years, so pristine was the
appearance of the Nordhavn 46.
Heidi offers an explanation: "We have a simple life. In the mornings, we
work on the boat, in the afternoons, we play."
Heidi drives the boat, navigates, cooks, and keeps the brightwork
immaculate. Wolfgang says he looks after the engine, bakes bread, and
relaxes. It's a combination that has served the Hasses well for more than
20 years of passagemaking the world.
