Fuel return compared to burn

Occasionally the question arises as to the amount of fuel that our diesels
return to the tank compared to what they consume. I recently did the
experiment. In the case of my 1969 Cummins V-470-M (185hp), running at 1500
RPM, I calculated that my engine consumed 2.4 gal/hr and returned 10.3
gal/hr. 4.35 times as much fuel returned as burned.
